Lyman-Morse : Custom Keel for ANNA

Marskeel was pleased to be asked to manufacture a complex custom keel for ANNA, a cold-molded 65′ modern classic daysailer under construction at boatbuilder Lyman-Morse. This beauty was designed by Paul Waring and Robert Stephens of Stephens Waring Yacht Design and Martha Coolidge of Martha Coolidge Design. See Video …

Here is what Lyman-Morse had to say, “The mission of this modern classic sloop is to provide easy day-sailing to have fun with friends and family. The roomy cockpit flows into the raised saloon that features large, drop windows in the aft bulkhead for easy socializing and communications between exterior and interior spaces.   Accommodations provide for 6, though overnights and cruising are not top priorities for the owners. However, purposeful crew accommodations for delivery up and down the eastern seaboard were specified.   And the owners cabin forward has all the creature comforts commensurate with a yacht of this caliber. While the owners’ racing agenda is light, this boat will no doubt perform around buoys or make efficient passage making the norm.”  Continue Reading …

The custom cast keel was designed to weigh 20,990 lbs and after construction weighed in at exactly 21,018 lbs a variance of only .133% ! This keel was unique in that it’s geometry included a large cut-away section in the aft of the keel for a tank to be positioned which created a very long and thin tail on the keel that required creative solutions to allow it to be cast. Because of the introduction of the tank above the aft section the positioning of the keel bolts were critical requiring a multi level CNC cut bolt rack. The casting is faired with epoxy fillers, coated with Interprotect 2000E barrier coat and will be shipped to Lyman-Morse on a custom designed and fabricated steel cradle.
